Biography

Zeena Parkins is a true pioneer of contemporary music who completely changed how we think about the harp. Based in New York, she has spent over four decades tearing down conventional boundaries and reimagining her instrument as a sound machine of limitless capacity. Whether playing a standard acoustic harp or shredding on her own self-designed, custom electric harps, Parkins bends genres to her will, operating smoothly across free improvisation, avant-jazz, contemporary classical, and experimental noise.

Her journey into radical sound started back in Detroit and took off when she moved to New York City in the mid-1980s. Becoming a cornerstone of the legendary Downtown experimental scene, Parkins quickly stood out for her highly personal approach. She doesn’t just pluck strings—she stretches them beyond their normal ranges, prepares them with objects, and routes them through complex analog and electronic processing systems. The resulting sonic spectrum spans from delicate, recognizable acoustic textures to raw, distorted electronic feedback and heavy percussive attacks.

Parkins’s collaborative footprint is massive. She has recorded and toured with iconic innovators like Björk, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, and Fred Frith, and has built a deeply respected body of work as a solo artist and bandleader. Beyond the concert stage, her visionary compositions have brought cinematic and physical depth to over fifty dance productions and multiple films, earning her three prestigious NY Dance and Performance Awards (Bessies) along with a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Doris Duke Artist Award.

As a valued member of the Catalytic Sound cooperative, Parkins bridges the historic depth of the original avant-garde movement with an active, evolving modern practice. For independent musicians and deep listeners looking for music that challenges technique, form, and emotion, her catalog represents a masterclass in creative freedom. Parkins continues to lecture, teach, and create, proving that the pursuit of new sonic terrain never truly stops.
